How to be Successful
Only target scholarships that apply to you. Each application requires a great deal of effort on your part and information/references from the College. We will do our best to help you. We will be unable to process scholarships for students who have not applied for a Marlborough Boys' College Record of Achievement. Many scholarships require a letter from the Principal. This will be based on your Record of Achievement.
Tell us as soon as possible which scholarships you are applying for and the information you require. Please do not go directly to the Principal as the system we have requires us to gather the information for Mr Hegarty.
Start gathering your information. You need evidence to back up what you say about yourself. For instance there are many hardship scholarships. You will need information about parents' income to complete the application.
Proof read your application well. The people reading your application receive hundreds of these and you want yours to stand out for the right reasons. Get a sensible email address that is easy for the person transcribing it. Some email addresses that students think are amusing are not appropriate for this kind of correspondence.
Your personal statement needs a great deal of care. Talk over your personal qualities with family and friends. A carefully crafted statement can be used in other applications and tweaked to fit each application.
Please do not be reluctant to ask for help. You can email Gail Fletcher, Careers Adviser at firstname.lastname@example.org or come and make an appointment.
Give us plenty of notice. We will endeavour to do our best for all students but if you hand it to us the day before it is due then you can be assured that we will not be commending you on your organisational or time management ability.
